He is the only instructor who will represent Safa at the World Cup training camp to be trained as a video assistant referee (VAR) who will function as the fifth official – similar to the third umpire in cricket who oversees disputes. The training camp in Qatar will focus on the technical aspect of VAR.
He now hopes to be selected for the VAR panel at the Fifa World Cup in Russia next year. Being short-listed for this new position in world cup soccer will put the stamp of approval on his role as an ambassador for the continent.
Damon, a respected referee on the continent, made his international debut in the 2006 World Cup qualification rounds when he was appointed to officiate the match between Croatia and Iceland in Germany.
The highlight of his career came in 2010 when he was appointed by Fifa to officiate the Soccer World Cup match between Slovakia and New Zealand in Rustenburg.
